My Testimony Part 4

My first two years at Columbia Bible College were difficult. In my heart, I left the campus many times. The Lord graciously dealt with me in those first two years, as a father does with his son. So many times, I just felt that I didn't fit in. I saw the Christian life much different than others seemed to view it on the campus of CBC. As a result, I felt frustrated and oftentimes lonely. That is until my Junior year. Then, she came. I will never forget that day. I was sitting in the Student Center with a classmate and she walked in with two friends. I watched them go in to the book store. The first thing I noticed about her were her shoes. Okay, I did notice that she was attractive, but the shoes told me a lot about her. She had on a pair of white canvas shoes that appeared to be purchased at K-Mart or Walmart. They told me that she was easy to please. Boy, did I need a girl like that. The previous few months I was actively praying for the Lord to bring someone into my life. And, I believed that He was answering that prayer. A few days later, the day had come for me to ask her to join me on a date. Her response, when I asked was, "oh, I'm going home to Wilmington this weekend." Needless to say, I was not encouraged. It was, as if, she said, "I've got to do my hair." In my heart, I gave up on her until the next day when she approached me in the breakfast line. She tapped me on the shoulder and asked if the invitation still was a possibility. I quickly said, "yes", and, well, as the old saying goes, the rest is history. In 1988 Debbie King became my wife and we now have three sons and two daughters in law. And oh, by the way, there is a twist to the story. When she asked if the date was still a possibility, I asked her why she wasn't going home, as she had said the day before. Her answer still churns me within. She said, "there is a hurricane off the coast of North Carolina and my parents have advised me to stay here." Guess what the name of the hurricane was? The name of the hurricane was "Bob".
